The team
Route's security team maintains the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the Route platform, protecting the data of our merchants and customers.Our team acts as trusted partners to the entire company, providing security expertise at all levels and to all groups. We're creating a resilient and secure infrastructure and application, and fostering a culture of security awareness and compliance throughout the organization.
The opportunity
As a Senior Security Engineer at Route, you will drive security initiatives that have impact across multiple teams. You’ll leverage your expertise in security, compliance, and privacy to shape policy, manage risk, and develop scalable security controls. You will collaborate with engineering, product, and other cross-functional teams to ensure that security is baked into every aspect of our operations. In addition, you’ll serve as a mentor, interviewer, and technical leader within the team helping to develop the next generation of security at Route.
What you’ll do
- Lead Security & Compliance Initiatives
Develop and implement security controls and compliance measures (e.g., GDPR, NIST). Contribute to risk assessments and guide mitigation strategies. - Champion Privacy & Incident Response
Partner with legal and compliance teams to embed privacy into daily operations. Lead incident response efforts, from detection to resolution and post-incident reviews. - Own Policy & Documentation
Create and maintain security policies aligned with company goals and regulatory standards. Share updates with stakeholders and drive policy improvements. - Enable Cross-Team Collaboration
Work closely with engineering and cross-functional teams to embed secure development practices. Align security priorities and promote knowledge sharing. - Mentor & Grow the Team
Provide guidance and technical leadership to team members. Participate in hiring processes and support a culture of continuous learning. - Optimize Tooling & Automation
Manage and improve security tools (e.g., SIEM, EDR). Identify automation opportunities to enhance detection, response, and operational efficiency.
What we’re looking for
- 5+ years of hands-on security engineering experience, with a proven track record of growing responsibility and impact.
- Deep knowledge of security frameworks (e.g., NIST, ISO 27001) and regulatory requirements like GDPR.
- Experience designing and implementing cloud security solutions (AWS, GCP, or Azure), network security, and identity/authentication systems.
- Familiarity with SIEM, EDR, vulnerability management, and log analysis tools.
- Proficient in scripting or light coding to support automation and tooling enhancements.
- Clear communicator—able to break down complex security topics for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- History of cross-functional collaboration and influencing security decisions across teams.
- Experience mentoring others and participating in hiring or team development.
- Strong understanding of risk assessments and translating findings into actionable, compliant controls.

Pay Transparency
Salary for this role: $185,000 - $195,000
The cash compensation above includes base salary, and is not reflective of potential commission for employees in eligible roles, or annual bonus targets under Route’s bonus plan for eligible roles. In addition to cash compensation, all Route employees are eligible to participate in Routes equity incentive plan to receive stock options per the terms of the agreement. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay. Individual compensation packages are based on a few different factors unique to each candidate, including their career level, skills, experience, specific geographic location qualifications and other job-related reasons.
