Job description:

Observable Space is seeking a creative Mechanical Design Engineer with a strong background in understanding and transforming project requirements into a completed design. The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for completing and updating all project-related information, from design details, cycle time, and assembly build instructions to communicating developments to the appropriate personnel defined within the project requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and complete design plans as specified by the project scope of work, customer specifications, engineering standards, and other related documentation.

  • Complete design of machine assemblies, sub-assemblies, part details, Bill of Materials (BOM) specifications, and machine timing charts.

  • Perform analysis of optomechanical parts, assemblies, tolerances, manufacturability and cost

  • Participate in assembly, testing and troubleshooting of prototype designs.

  • Support manufacturing and assembly staff via documentation and training related to new and existing products.

  • Conduct and communicate in an efficient manner that ensures project requirements, scheduling, and budgets are kept within the project scope.

  • Attend and utilize project meetings and documentation for a clear understanding of project requirements.

  • Communicate with Vendors.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.

  • 3-5 years of related experience

  • Expert skill with SolidWorks 3D Design Software

  • Proficient in Machine Design

  • Proficient in technical knowledge of mechanical/electrical components and their use, along with knowledge of , robotics, and lasers

  • Must have excellent communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Proficiency in performing Finite Element Analysis of parts and complex assemblies is preferred.

  • Experience with optics and opto-mechanical design is preferred.
